In 1987, when my high-school band played our first club date, I was desperate for an escape hatch. That night, I saw there might be a place for me in the world of downtown poets, artists, and punks.
Hey, thank you so much Alex, appreciate that! I have to admit: I was really taken by Blow Up Your Mind. But telegraphing (at least a little) of what it's actually about is a bonus. I'm putting this name on the ever-growing list. And: Thanks for reading!
I actually don’t know that reference. I grew up outside dc in the early / mid 80s, in the “white flight” era u describe so vividly. I’ve always into punk and post-punk and “grunge,” which is its own thing… but way too shy/loner-ish to be in bands… obviously, your work is really resonating
Appreciate all of this. "Blow Up Your Mind" isn't anything, I just liked the sound of it (a writer I admire proposed it). Hearing WHY these names resonate with you is hugely helpful!
Ooooh yes.. same here. We have a bustling hardcore / emo scene here in NE PA, between Wilkes Barre and the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia. Going to a show next month with my pal who took me to my first proper "underground hardcore" show way back when. Lucky is the right word!
Ah thank you Dear! I actually really like that title, but it's still more evocative than functional. Having this conversation with a number of Substackers right now: As writers, what draws us is imagery. But I also just want to get found, so that the writing lands in the right laps. It's a sticky challenge! All that said, I'm going to put "Breaking Through" in the pile of "maybes." Thanks again!
Thank you Seth! I like Dispatches or Views from the Edge.
Thank you Dear! Appreciate the input so much....
Views from the edge is my vote

Also, “dispatches from the edge reminded me of journalism school which… yeah… whereas “views from
The edge” felt very personal and the tension is implied, it made me want to know who is viewing which edges…

Awesome story , thanks!
So yeah… this reminded me of my younger days playing music. Yours is much more serious (I did a lot of silly stuff haha) but this was nice 😊
Ah, thank you! Yeah I was incredibly lucky to grow up when and where I did, no doubt....

This is great! You evoked a very clear image - felt like I was there.
Maybe you should title your Substack 'Breaking Through' ?

Thank you friend, appreciate the hell out of that....
